New CE from the PNCB Continuing Competence Summit

When a certified nursing professional renews their credential, what does that mean for the nurse, the profession, and health care consumers? What emerging methods to document competence should certification boards consider for the future?

In 2021, PNCB convened a stakeholder summit of industry leaders and other constituents to share findings for a multi-year research project on continuing competence and answer the above questions and others.

Through our Continuing Competence Initiative, we engaged nurses, employers, the public, and industry leaders. These stakeholders responded with robust feedback about PNCB's current certification renewal process—and new possibilities. Our unique methodology incorporated ethnographic interviews throughout the health care landscape to understand the culture of competence. We also fielded multiple surveys, analyzed competency models throughout the U.S., and validated conceptual constructs with the aim of making recertification more meaningful for all involved.

From the results of the summit, PNCB has developed three no-cost CE modules.

Continuing Competence Summit Webinar 1: History & Background

In module 1 of this 3-part video series, you’ll walk through PNCB’s recertification history and the “why” behind this initiative to make Recert more meaningful for nurses, the profession, health care consumers, and employers (2.5 contact hours).

Continuing Competence Summit Webinar 2: Research Outcomes

Module 2 explores research strategies and findings for PNCB’s multi-year Continuing Competence Initiative. Step through ethnographic research, value chain interviews, surveys, and more to see how we engaged with multiple stakeholders to paint a holistic picture of pediatric nursing’s culture of competence. A special focus on the Pediatric Nurse Mindset and a Pediatric RN Competency Framework is included (2.0 contact hours).

Continuing Competence Summit Webinar 3: What Will Happen

The third and final module shows how the “why” of module 1 and the research findings from module 2 resulted in changes to PNCB recertification. Descriptions of what will change and when are included to share our process on making Recert more meaningful for certificants and other stakeholders (2.0 contact hours)

CE offered by PNCB is accredited by the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). Certification is not required to learn with PNCB, so please share with colleagues, students, and others with a passion for pediatric nursing care.
