PNCB Presents A Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) Framework for Career Progression

PNCB Board Chair Dr. Amanda Vickers, DNP, RN, CPNP-PC, PMHS and Past Board Chair Dr. Michael A. Maymi, DNP, APRN, CPNP-AC, CCRN, CNE will present this framework at the conference September 9-12. They will provide an overview of this comprehensive tool that helps Pediatric Nurse Practitioners assess their growth, set goals, and demonstrate their value throughout their careers.

Framework Elements:

  • Competency areas and definitions: Broad areas of proficiency
  • Exemplars: Specific ways competencies manifest in on-the-job behavior
  • Behavioral indicators: Describe effective performance at each proficiency level
  • Emphasizes the unique competencies of NPs who have been educated and specialize in pediatrics

Seven PNP Competency Areas:

  • Clinician: Core pediatric medical knowledge and patient care skills
  • Collaborator: Inter and intra-professional teamwork and communication
  • Advocate: Patient, family, and profession advocacy
  • Educator: Patient, family, and peer education
  • Scholar: Continuous learning and evidence-based practice
  • Leader: Management and leadership in healthcare settings or beyond
  • Innovator: Contribution to practice improvement and healthcare innovation

Proficiency Levels:

Level 0: Entry to practice (not represented on the framework)

Level 1: Early career (1-3 years post-initial practice)

Level 2: Mid-career (3-7 years experience)

Level 3: Advanced career (7+ years experience)
