Dr. Deborah W. Busch is an esteemed Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing with over three decades of experience in pediatric and lactation care. She holds a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Chatham University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Nursing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. As a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, Dr. Busch has dedicated her career to advancing breastfeeding practices and supporting the mother-infant dyad. Dr. Busch’s extensive professional journey includes significant roles such as Director of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care at Johns Hopkins and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Hanover Pediatric Associates. Her research has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals, focusing on lactation education, breastfeeding support, and innovative simulation training for nursing students. A recognized leader in her field, Dr. Busch has received numerous awards, including the American Academy of Nursing Fellow, the Johns Hopkins Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners' Presidential Commendation. She actively contributes to several national and international lactation and nursing organizations, ensuring the integration of best practices in breastfeeding support. Dr. Busch’s commitment to breastfeeding advocacy and education is evident through her leadership roles, research projects, and numerous presentations at prestigious conferences. Her expertise and passion for nurturing the breastfeeding relationship make her an invaluable resource for healthcare professionals and parents alike.
Presenter: JoAnne Flagg, DNP, CPNP-PC, IBCLC, CNE, FAAN, FAANP
JoAnne Silbert-Flagg’s scholarship focuses on promoting breastfeeding from pregnancy through weaning via direct patient care and the education of health care professionals. Dr. Silbert-Flagg is on the editorial review board of the Journal of Human Lactation. She is editor of the textbook Maternal and Child Health Nursing (9th ed.), 2022, Wolters Kluwer, authoring five chapters, including “Nutritional Needs of a Newborn.” She is co-editor of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certification Review Guide: Primary Care, 2020, Jones and Bartlett, authoring the “Health Promotion” chapter with expanded content on breastfeeding. She is past chair of the Breastfeeding Expert Panel for the American Academy of Nursing. She provides primary care as a pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP) and certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) at Columbia Medical Practice. She is co-investigator of “Impact of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative in Maryland on selected WIC agency breastfeeding rates and maternal experiences of breastfeeding support.” Dr. Silbert-Flagg is the Associate Dean for Clinical Practice at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
